What Information is Important to Record After an Accident?

After a car accident, time is of the essence. Immediate action needs to be taken to get emergency medical attention for those injured in the incident. Even if someone involved in a collision does not consider themselves to be injured, it is still vital that they get a medical check as a priority.

Similarly, information regarding the circumstances of the incident should be reported within a given time frame. If action is not taken to preserve and record evidence, it can be more difficult to establish fault further down the line, and this could ultimately lead to costly lawsuits. Therefore, it is important that you understand what information you should take action to record after the event.

Reporting Details About the Accident

If your car accident occurred in California and there was property damage of at least $1000, or there were any injuries, the car accident needs to be reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). When doing this, you will need to provide details about all drivers involved. This information will include their name, address, drivers’ license information and date of birth. You will also need to state the place and time in which the accident took place and give an explanation of the damages or injuries that occurred.

Recording Your Own Version of Events

For the purpose of establishing fault, it will also be necessary to reflect upon and record your version of events. While you should not necessarily volunteer this information to your insurance provider, it may be helpful to write down what you experienced as soon as possible after the incident. This will enable you to accurately record what you saw while it is fresh in your mind.

Generating Witness Statements

Witness statements can be invaluable in getting to the root of what led up to the collision. If you are able to speak to any witnesses at the scene of the accident, you should make sure to take down their contact information.

The information that you are able to record in the aftermath of a car accident can be vital in ensuring that you are able to successfully establish fault. Make sure to conduct thorough research on California personal injury law to understand your rights.
